I was shopping at 3-D back when the store existed, and like many stores that sold records, a new song was playing over the intercom to interest shoppers and hopefully induce them to buy it. The song was “At Seventeen,” the singer was Janis Ian, and I was mesmerized. I bought the album instead of the shampoo I had gone there for, listened to it on my gold plastic stereo (cutting edge) until I had all the songs memorized, and then I sang along. She released more albums and I bought them all. When cassettes came out, I bought the cassette. When cd’s came out, I bought the cd. Napster? Limewire? Sampled and purchased. Her songs are on my Spotify. Amazon music. Several times a week, I say, “Computer, play Janis Ian,”. and I listen to her unforgettable voice singing her wonderful songs while I work. That day after I got home from 3-D, I washed my hair with a bar of soap while I listened to songs that spoke to me. I had something way better than shampoo.
