Mamacita says: Remember the expression “audio-visual?” Remember the group of kids whose free period each day was given over to the library, and specifically to run the projectors? 16mm movies? Reel-to-reel sound recordings? Filmstrip projectors? (BEEP. Advance. BEEP. Advance. . . .) That big gray square record player? Huge TV’s (the back, not the screen) that rested precariously atop a wheeled cart, which a teacher had to reserve a good two weeks in advance? For what, I’m not sure, as VCR’s hadn’t been invented yet and DVD’s existed only in sci fi movies. I vaguely remember little antennae traveling with the cart, and a few teachers and coaches “tuning in” to news or sports replays, etc.

When the first space shuttle blasted off, my students didn’t get to see it. I don’t think my school even owned a TV at that point. However, when that same shuttle landed, about eighty kids were packed into a classroom, eyes glued to that smallish screen, watching entranced as history was made: the shuttle landed safely, and before those very straining eyes, too.

I’m thinking that it was this event that inspired some schools to invest in some better “audio-visual” equipment than the ancient shared 16mm projector and portable, folding, grainy screen. History was being made and the resources were now available for schools to allow their students to see it. Well, some of it, anyway, and some schools are still waiting for the resources AND the equipment. And the permission to use it.

A few years later, my school wasn’t much more advanced, technology-wise, and we rented a big-screen TV to watch the Challenger launch.

For the next few years, shuttle launches and landings were almost commonplace; there was another horrendous tragedy in the sky (Columbia) but for the most part, NASA has done outstandingly well. I am a huge fan of the shuttle program and it’s heartbreaking to know that it’s about to end. Bad decision. I’d far rather my tax dollars be used to explore the universe than to have them squandered on certain other projects which I shall not mention here lest I start a brouhaha from which I shall not back down and from which others won’t back down from their stance, either. Therefore, silence is golden. Snort.

I will be posting more about NASA’s programs soon, as it is my pet project, for want of a better phraseology.

The sky’s not the limit any more, and this thrills me to the core.

Hey, I made a little rhyme! Yes, I do that all the time. Channeling Fezzik, wherever you are. . . .

In the meantime, why not send your face to space?

Hah, did it again.

Halloween has been and gone but it’s still THAT SEASON, which means many things, one of which is that I have a giant bowl half-filled with Tootsie Roll Pops and Hershey bars on my coffee table, and another of which is that I am once again compelled to obsess over my favorite cult film, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey.”

Please remember that I am a sedate and typical possibly not-as-young-as-you-are woman, and the following information may or may not be true. Probably it’s not, because sedate and typical women, particularly mothers of innocent children, never do such things, and are in fact appalled at the very notion.

“Hot patootie, bless my soul! I really love that rock n’ roll!”

It may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you, or maybe not, that when I was <strike> a lot </strike> younger, My boyfriend and I might have gone to the midnight showing of this film at least once a month, and that rumor has it that he went as Riff Raff and I went as Magenta, the Domestic. It’s possible that I went with a deck of cards, a newspaper, a water gun, a baggie of rice, a party hat, a garter, and a noisemaker. Perhaps I even owned fishnet stockings. I still know every song by heart. I used to do the Time Warp. Maybe. In another time, and another space. Not to mention in a smaller body.

I may have used the decks of cards as frisbees; I really can’t remember that far back.

It might also be true that, long ago, I used to teach my study hall students to do the Time Warp, but then again, unless you were there, you’ll never know.

“Don’t dream it; be it.”

Speaking of sexy men (Oh, were we? Well, we are now.) I have this to say: Tim Curry. Then and now, but especially then. I know you all want desperately to see a picture of Tim Curry in drag. Well, I do, anyway. Like many of us, he used to be really hot. (Don’t look if you’re all prudey and pruney; fair warning.) (Oh, for heaven’s sake, you’ve already seen it on the movie poster!)

It’s a dreadful movie, really. Silly, soft-pornish, ridiculous, terrible acting, stilted dancing, camp at its <strike> best </strike> worst. . . . And yet, for some reason, it’s endeared itself to many people in spite of it all. I still love it.

“It’s not easy having a good time! Even smiling makes my face ache!”

These days, what I remember most is that my outfit was a size 5. In short, the domestic’s costume no longer fits, in more ways than one.

Memorize the entire movie? My goodness, that would be ridiculous for a woman my age! Why, I’m almost hyperventilating at the very thought!

“Your new playmate is loose and somewhere in the castle grounds.”

Rumors that I have a membership card in my wallet may or may not be true. I’m officially grown up now; why would I do that, now really? And why would I own one of the few copies of the soundtrack from the sequel? Shock Treatment? Or a Richard O’Brien cd?

And for you Star Trek fans out there, I’ve included a second video, proving that you can’t escape from the Time Warp, even in outer space. I might add, one would probably be even more apt to encounter a time warp in outer space. Well, it seems logical to me.
Enjoy.

“They” say that Peter Hinwood, who played Rocky, is so mortified by his participation in this movie that he can’t even talk about it.

I hope everybody noticed Barry Bostwick’s appearance in the Rocky Horror Glee episode. . . .You won’t see him in the Glee video, but believe me, he was there.

I’m a big Bostwick fan. I even remember that he was the original Danny in Grease.

“If only we were amongst friends… or sane persons!”

In context, the whole Rocky Horror thing is so absurd it’s, well, absurd. Taken out of context, some of the music is really good. This song, most of which was deleted from both the American and the British versions of the film, still has the power to make me pensive.

I’ve done a lot, God knows I’ve tried
To find the truth, I’ve even lied
But all I know is down inside
I’m bleeding.
And Super Heroes come to feast
To taste the flesh not yet deceased
And all I know is still the beast
is feeding.
And crawling on the planet’s face
Some insects called the human race
Lost in time, and lost in space
And meaning.

And, I’m really glad that whoever-was-responsible-for-such-things finally wised up and put “Superheroes” back in the movie. I love that song. I couldn’t find the actual video of it, but this is singing by the cast, even if it’s not the movie itself.

This is not a movie for children; perish the thought. But it’s a fun romp for adults. Learn to participate; it’s fun. Don’t forget the party hats.

Of course, if you don’t have time to watch an entire movie, you can always check out the bunnies.

I loved to read about Beany Malone for so many reasons, some of which were the casual ways their Irish ancestry was a part of their everyday lives.

What is it supposed to be?

Why, it’s St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, of course.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all. If you’re not wearing green, strangers are allowed to pinch you.

What’s that? I can’t hear you. Come a little closer. . . thaaaaat’s right. Gotcha.

I repost this, adding a little here and there and subtracting a little likewise, each March 17, so if it looks familiar to you, you’re not crazy. Well, not about this post, anyway.

Billy Madison‘s speech made everyone in the room dumber, but Itay Talgam not only makes the world smarter: he makes the world smile. Somehow, watching this gentleman makes me feel better about the world, and even about. . . me. And that, my friends, is some kind of miracle. Mr. Talgam, you rock. Wow.

If social media is all about building trust-based community, music must then be an embodiment of social media.

Enjoy.

Of course, you all probably already know that if you mix candy corn and salted peanuts together in a big bowl, you’ve got handfuls of PayDay bar goodness.

Peanuts are a meat substitute, and candy corn is pretty much fat-free (paraffin never hurt anybody) so really, a big bowl of candy corn and peanuts is GOOD for you.

Eat up.

Oh, and THIS IS HALLOWE’EN!

In case you are wondering, the word “Hallowe’en” is SUPPOSED to have an apostrophe in it. It’s an old spelling, but I like it so I use it. I think you should, too. It would help us all remember what the word actually means.

I learned it from the literature book my mother used when she was in the third grade. I loved that book as a child, and I still do. Wonder of wonders – and oh MY, how veddy, veddy politically incorrect – that book contained actual, honest-to-pete LITERATURE! Yes, actual literature, not those stupid, insipid, limited-vocabulary travesties some teachers call “literature;” heck, I wouldn’t even call that stuff “stories.” It’s most certainly not literature.

But that third grade book had excerpts from Peter Pan, and Les Miserables, and Little House in the Big Woods. That little schoolbook is why I read those novels when I was in lower elementary school.

Back then, schoolbooks were purchased, not rented, and Mom loved that book so much, she kept it, and re-read it many times. Once I learned to read, so did I.

I don’t think I ever had a Language Arts book I liked well enough to want to keep, even if it had been permitted. Watered-down abridgements are the devil, and I mean that in a truly satanic way. And you really don’t want to get me started on “limited vocabulary” selections. Kids learn new words by exposure to new words. No exposure = no new words added to one’s vocabulary.

No wonder so many of our kids today aren’t interested in reading for pleasure. Our schools don’t give them anything worth reading. Some of them graduate – or don’t – without ever having been exposed to a single interesting, challenging thing worth reading.

And this from someone who actually liked Silas Marner.

But speaking of Halloween, my favorite person, my mentor, my idol, Steve Spangler, will be on “Ellen” again tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 30! Check your TV Guide for the time in your area, and be sure to watch! Then go to his blog and tell him how breathtakingly beautiful awesome he was!

Here are some things Steve Spangler has done on “Ellen” in segments past; sit up straight and pay attention when he gets to those pumpkins – it’ll knock your socks off, if you’re wearing socks. If you’re not, it’ll curl your toes. If you have no toes, well, I cried because I had no shoes.

If you go thou and do likewise, don’t forget your goggles.

Remember: You simply MUST watch Ellen tomorrow – Friday – because Steve Spangler is her guest.

There will be a test. There will also be prizes.

I’m not kidding.

As a teacher, I am always on the lookout for new and better things to do, and for better ways to do what I have always done, and Chris’s daughter Violette has shown me yet another way that social media can be utilized and thoroughly enjoyed in and out of the classroom.

What an AWESOME IDEA, Brogans. Thank you for sharing.

Mamacita says: Once upon a time, there was a lady who had two sweet little cats named Vera and Millie. One day, it was discovered that Vera and Millie liked to pee on the carpet on the landing at the foot of the stairs, behind a big mirror which was supposed to be hanging on the hall wall but which was at that time still sitting on the carpet leaning against the landing wall because the lady had yet to find a strong enough stud to support it.

The lady thought for a while about stuffing both cats in the crockpot and serving them up for a weekend brunch, but decided to forgive them, clean the carpet, hang the mirror, and pretend nothing bad had happened at all.

After all, once a lady has found a nice, big, strong stud, any ending is BOUND to be a happy one.

The end.

P.S. P.U.

I find these people to be dismally repulsive; I wouldn’t watch their lives on a bet. These negative feelings towards them do not, however, prevent me from having a genuine laugh over this parody. Several laughs. Many laughs, truth be told. Tons of laughs, and all genuine.

Their values, their priorities, their morals, and their entire lives are so perverse, selfish, adulterous, and childish. . . . I mean, come ON. All they’re good for is a laugh.

Thanks, Kathy and Sulu. I needed that. It’s been a long day.

“Of course I love kids. Have you SEEN my GIRLFRIEND?”

Mamacita says: The new Carnival of Education is up over at Steve Spangler’s Blog. While you’re there, check out his post about color-changing solar beads. If your child has a hard time remembering to reapply sunscreen, why don’t you make a bracelet, or ankle bracelet, or necklace, or thread a bead on a chain and put it around his/her neck, etc, put sunscreen on the beads, and tell your kid to come back in the house for more sunscreen when the beads change color? This puts some responsibility on your child, and it’s cool to see the beads change color. Just a thought. My son is so fair-skinned, just a few minutes in the sun blisters him into agony. Yet, when he was little, he resisted coming back inside to have his Bullfrog #50 reapplied. If I’d had access to these solar beads back then, our summers would have been a lot more peaceful. He would have loved “being in charge” of his own sunscreen, and he would have loved keeping an eye on the beads, waiting for them to change color, and then telling ME it was time for more sunscreen.

My son’s fair skin made summer band camp eventually impossible. He sweated through even the heartiest sunscreen and there wasn’t always time to reapply.

He hated band camp, so I guess it all evens out. I wasn’t a Mommy who usually let her children quit something once they’d signed up and people were counting on them, but I did let him quit band camp before he got so crispy he might as well have slathered barbecue sauce on himself instead of Bullfrog.

Except for my daughter, who always has a lovely tan in the summer, none of us has much pigment; we’re all pale and pasty, and when we go out into the sun, we turn into Grillface. (language warning)

In case you’re wondering, this is NOT a paid post. I done it outta sheer love for all involved.

I don’t mind reading paid posts, as long as I’m told it was done for money right up front. Otherwise, I feel deceived.

Also? I’m counting down ’till BlogHer. Can’t WAIT.

Note to self: must buy decent shoes

1. I’ve never used an ATM machine. That’s always good for some “oh really” expressions.

2. I have never watched a survivor reality show, and have no desire to. Maybe if there was a real reality show, where people had to SURVIVE with only the skills they already knew, I’d be interested, but most of the survivor-type reality shows are more like frat inductions and freshman hazings than anything to do with actual survival. If people honestly wanted a true survivor saga, drop some businesspeople down in a public middle school for a few weeks. THAT’S survival, my friends.

3. I still haven’t ever watched Oprah. Still not interested, either.

4. Still haven’t lost that last fifty pounds. My penchant for popsicles on these muggy days isn’t helping.

5. Summer session starts Monday, and I still haven’t gathered all my syllabi and tests together.

6. After years of searching, I finally found the Wonderworks version of A Little Princess in DVD format, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. It’s the only version of A Little Princess that’s faithful to the book, and when a movie is NOT faithful to the book, I have no use for it. But the Wonderworks version is absolutely wonderful in every way. Besides, Professor Sprout is in it, so you KNOW it’s going to be good. I love this book so much, I named my daughter after the main character. And that’s why there is no “h” at the end of her name. Don’t waste your time or money on any of the more recent remakes of this book, or on the equally bad really old versions. The Wonderworks version is the best one. In fact, Wonderworks versions of everything are the best ones.

7. I’m going to WordCamp in Chicago this weekend, and I haven’t done any laundry since getting home from Idaho the other day. Conclusion: Unless I intend to be either naked or smelly in Chicago, I’d better throw a few loads in before I go to bed tonight.

8. I priced a commuter flight from Indianapolis to Chicago and it was over two hundred dollars. In fact, it cost more than my ticket to San Francisco last summer! Ridiculous. So, I looked up Amtrak prices, and for less than fifty bucks, I’m taking the train, round-trip, to Chicago on Friday! I’ve never taken a real train anywhere. I can’t wait!

9. I am covered from head to toe and everywhere in between with mosquito bites. I have never itched so badly in my life. Plus, I look like I’ve been in a paintball fight.

10. Speaking of reality shows, I am so not interested in Jon and Kate or any of their 8. The intensity of my non-interest is so great that when people invariably try to talk to me about that sad dysfunctional family, I have to turn and walk away lest I say something dreadful, such as the fact that I consider them a sad, dysfunctional family. What they say or do is none of my business, nor is it any of yours, and perhaps my distaste would be made clearer in the words of my idol, Dr. Perry Cox, who would perhaps put my feelings about Jon and Kate and all of their 8 in words something like these:

Except, of course, that I think Hugh Jackman is hot beyond all existing words.
