<p>I’ve always stood in awe before the power of words.</p>
<p>With words, simple words, we can delve into the past and the future, and all the various time blends that scientists must use big words to explain, but which writers can explain simply by using one or two of the helping verbs Ol’ Miz Roberts made us memorize back in seventh grade.</p>
<p>Time machines in stories show the blending of times with numerals and fast-motion whipping past the window of the machine, or by numbers going backwards or forwards on a dial.</p>
<p>Writers just use a helping verb or two.</p>
<p>Scientists discuss the concept of time, past time, present time, future time, using diagrams and equations and big, big words.</p>
<p>Writers just stick a “have” or “had” or a “will” in front of a plain old verb to show the same thing.</p>
<p>Past and future are the easiest to measure. They are also the easiest to understand, or comprehend.<br />
“Already happened” and “not happened yet” are no biggie.</p>
<p>It’s the present that’s the most difficult to comprehend and measure, because even with all of our scientific knowledge, inventions, devices, equations, whatever, the present is too fleeting to measure. The actual ‘present’ is so fleeting, we can’t even realize it ourselves. By the time we do, it’s already gone. Blink, and it’s past. Breathe, and it’s past. Sit still; each beat of your heart is in the past, because by the time you are aware,  it’s too late; it’s gone.</p>
<p>Look at your children. They’re in the present, sure, if you want to call it that. Watch them sleeping. Each rise and fall of the covers is already part of the past. History. It’s already happened.</p>
<p>And it will never happen again. Not that particular breathe. Not that particular heartbeat. Watch them play; they run, except, they ran.  They sing, except, they sang.  While they are running and singing, part of it has already happened.  They climb on you and you hug them.  Except, they climbed on you and you hugged them, because those moments are already gone, too.  Even if you are still together there on the chair, more and more of what you think is &#8220;this moment&#8221; is already past.  The moments are history. They&#8217;re gone before you gently ease your children off your lap and put them to bed, both of which are already history, too.  These moments are gone and will never come again.</p>
<p>So often we say that we can’t WAIT for a particular phase or week or school year, etc, to be over with. Be careful what you wish, my dears. . . . When it’s gone, it’s gone.  Try not to wish your lives away just because a little piece of it isn&#8217;t to your liking at a certain moment &#8211; which is already gone before you&#8217;re even aware.</p>
<p>The actual present can’t be measured, not by us, not yet. Use it carefully, for once you’re aware of it, it’s already part of your history.  And your history, and mine, are, of course, part of the history of mankind.</p>
<p>Ah, the power of words, that we can so clearly express the elements of time with just a few simple helping verbs.</p>
<p>I wondered about it. (simple past: one-shot deal, it’s over.)</p>
<p>For many years, I have wondered about it. (present perfect: I was wondering in the past and I’m STILL wondering. Two times are represented here, one in the past and one in the present.)</p>
<p>I had wondered about it before I said something. (past perfect: both actions are in the past, but one is more recent than the other. Two times are represented; both past.)</p>
<p>I have always enjoyed teaching this concept  (in the past and now!) and with adult students, it’s even more awesome. I’ve had students weep, during this lesson.</p>
<p>Words are powerful. A pen in the hand is power. Use words carefully, and properly. Choose them wisely.<br />
Remember, there’s a big difference between a wise man and a wise guy. And which would you prefer: a day off or an off day?</p>

<p>Mamacita says: It makes me sad that so many parents are not allowing their children to dwell in the world of innocent fantasy.  These parents feel that to allow it is equivalent to lying to their children about what is real and what isn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t they understand that to a child, both worlds are real?  I&#8217;ll go one further: to all people of any age who retain their believing hearts, and who use their brains as God (and biology) intended, both worlds are real, too.</p>
<p>My daughter was seven when she asked the question I&#8217;d been dreading for seven years: &#8220;Mommy, is there really a Santa Claus?&#8221;</p>
<p>However, thanks to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Ingalls" target="_blank">Caroline Quiner Ingalls</a>, I knew exactly how to answer her. And, this answer fully satisfied my little child, and me.</p>
<p>Laura and Mary&#8217;s Ma knew how to explain to her children about Santa Claus without destroying their faith in miracles and magic:</p>
<p>.<em> . . then Laura had a chance to speak without interrupting. She said &#8220;There isn&#8217;t any fireplace.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Whatever are you talking about?&#8221; Ma asked her.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Santa Claus,&#8221; Laura answered.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Eat your supper, Laura, and let&#8217;s not cross bridges till we come to them,&#8221; said Ma.</em></p>
<p><em>Laura and Mary knew that Santa Claus could not come down a chimney when there was no chimney. One day Mary asked Ma how Santa Claus could come. Ma did not answer. Instead, she asked, &#8220;What do you girls want for Christmas?&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>. . . &#8220;Ma!&#8221; (Laura) cried. &#8220;there IS a Santa Claus, isn&#8217;t there?&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Of course there&#8217;s a Santa Claus, said Ma. She set the iron on the stove to heat again.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;The older you are, the more you know about Santa Claus,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You are so big now, you know he can&#8217;t be just one man, don&#8217;t you? You know he is everywhere on Christmas Eve. He is in the Big Woods, and in Indian Territory, and far away in York State, and here. He comes down all the chimneys at the same time. You know that, don&#8217;t you?&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Yes, Ma,&#8221; said Mary and Laura.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Well,&#8221; said Ma. &#8220;then you see &#8211; &#8220;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;I guess he is like angels,&#8221; Mary said, slowly. And Laura could see that, just as well as Mary could.</em></p>
<p><em>Then Ma told them something else about Santa Claus. He was everywhere, and besides that, he was all the time.</em></p>
<p><em>Whenever anyone was unselfish, that was Santa Claus.</em></p>
<p><em>Christmas Eve was the time when everybody was unselfish. On that one night, Santa Claus was everywhere, because everybody, all together, stopped being selfish and wanted other people to be happy. And in the morning you saw what that had done.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;If everybody wanted everybody else to be happy, all the time, then would it be Christmas all the time?&#8221; Laura asked, and Ma said, &#8220;Yes, Laura.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>&#8220;Charity&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean &#8220;giving to the poor and needy;&#8221; it means LOVE, and love covers all bases. Using a belief system to rationalize your own personal whatevers is a cop-out, plain and simple. There are people out there who need you, and to walk on by because they said or did something that &#8220;offended&#8221; you is . . . okay, I&#8217;ll say it: it&#8217;s evil. Selfish and evil.</p>

<p><strong>The three stages of man:</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. He believes in Santa Claus</strong></p>
<p><strong>2. He doesn&#8217;t believe in Santa Claus</strong></p>
<p><strong>3. He IS Santa Claus.</strong></p>
<p>That struck me as being funny, and true. And also, even, a little bit sad, and I&#8217;m not sure why. Poignancy is always a combination of emotions, and knowing something wonderful is temporary makes us sad, even while we revel in it.</p>
<p>I am Santa Claus. And I do NOT want to ever let the people I love down, at Christmas or any other time. But I also realize that the people we love most have the most potential for hurting. And for being hurt. Any people who are emotionally involved have tremendous power over each other. I hope we all try to use that power only for good.</p>
<p>You know, like Superman. Superman used his powers for good. Unless he was under the influence of kryptonite, in which case he became a flying armageddon.  I&#8217;ve met many human kryptonite chunks, working tirelessly to promote only their own beliefs and working just as tirelessly to tear down everybody else&#8217;s.  They work so hard at destroying that they&#8217;ve no time left for building up.</p>
<p>Let us never allow the influence of &#8216;something else&#8217; to turn us into anything other than good.</p>
<p>&#8220;Something else&#8221; being possibly another person, or just, something else. &#8220;Under the influence&#8221; is &#8220;under the influence,&#8221; whatever outside &#8216;something else&#8217; is influencing us.</p>
<p>You are Santa Claus for someone. Do not let them down.  The people you know, the people you love, the people you know AND love, and people you don&#8217;t even know, need you to be Santa Claus.  Nameless, faceless children need you.  They need you badly.  If you&#8217;ve got a biscuit, please give someone half.</p>
<p>No belief system in the universe is a reason NOT to be Santa for someone.</p>
<p>And if you are a person who does not believe in this mysterious spirit of generosity we call Santa Claus, then, um, uh, hmmm. . . . . okay, I&#8217;ll say it. You are stupid. Grow up and become Santa Claus. Somewhere out there is a child who desperately needs your powers. It might be your own child, or it might be a stranger&#8217;s. What difference does it make what child it is? Get out there and make someone happy. Or, at least, happier. Make a difference. Ho ho ho.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll go even farther: If you are the kind of person who gets all huffy and offended and indignant because someone dared to wish you well in a language not suited to your personal belief system, shame on you. You&#8217;re angry because someone DARED wish you well? How dare YOU!!!!! How dare you throw someone&#8217;s sincere good wishes back into his/her face!!!!!</p>
<p>Now, get out there and make someone happy. If you have no children, go borrow some.</p>
<p>Life is so fleeting; why waste any of it in offended huffiness? We should all be trying our best to add to life, not suck the wonder out of it.</p>
<p>Oh, and fair warning: if you don&#8217;t like the tone of this post, suck it up. It&#8217;s the first of many, this season, because easily offended people are one of my favorite targets.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re the whiny kid on the playground who is good for a show every time he/she doesn&#8217;t get his/her own way.</p>
<p>Is that you? I hope not. Such reactions are ugly in a child, but even uglier in an adult. But if it is, I&#8217;ll say it again: shame on you.</p>
<p>Santa is a symbol, a representation of a person who lives to help others. He&#8217;s a role model for us all.</p>
<p>Bring it on.</p>

<p>You know.  Those people, places, events, and stories that EVERYBODY knows?</p>
<p>Or, rather, these days, knew. . . .</p>
<p>The universe is incomprehensible only to those who don&#8217;t have any imagination, and imagination is available only to those with the ability to make connections.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll go a step further, so get your dukes ready to put up.</p>
<p>After a certain age, the ability to make connections is dependent on one&#8217;s personal choices.</p>
<p>Small children are prisoners in their homes, and must rely on their parents, or other adults, for their surroundings and what they&#8217;re exposed to.  Good parents, of course, make sure their children are surrounded by fairy tales, nursery rhymes, stories of all kinds, poetry, plays, lively discussion that requires knowledge and invites participation, encouragement, sharing, generosity, etc.  Poor parents set their kids in front of the TV and go about their business.</p>
<p>It is only by exposure to the universe that we can hope to make sense of it, and discover that sense is the least of it.</p>
<p>The more we know, the more we CAN know.  This requires vocabulary.</p>
<p>The more words we know, the more connections we can make.  The more connections we can make, the more we can understand.  The more we can understand, the more we know.  The more we know, the more we want to know.  It&#8217;s a cycle, a not-vicious circle of wonder and wit and whimsy and understanding and the wanting to understand more and more and more.</p>
<p>Sadly, all some people want to know is when Jerry Springer is on tonight, what&#8217;s for dinner, and who won the game.  Their children&#8217;s questions are answered with variations of &#8220;How would I know?&#8221; and &#8220;Don&#8217;t bother me; I&#8217;m exhausted.&#8221; and &#8220;Ain&#8217;t that what you go to school for?&#8221;  And worse.</p>
<p>We are facing a planet run by people who know nothing that isn&#8217;t literal.  They are very good (or not) at bubbling in answers, making their mark heavy and dark, but who have no idea where the planets got their names, or why William Tell shot an apple off his son&#8217;s head, or what the words &#8220;homogenized&#8221; and &#8220;pasteurized&#8221; mean on the milk carton.  Heck, tons of &#8220;educated&#8221; people couldn&#8217;t even pronounce &#8220;homogenized&#8221; or &#8220;pasteurized.&#8221;  Or read them.  Or know that the words on the outsides of our food cartons, bottles, etc, indicate what&#8217;s inside.</p>
<p>Or that Humpty Dumpty was far more than an egg.  Or even that he was an egg at all.</p>
<p>Our nursing homes (well, not mine!) will be chosen by people who speak only one language (you know, the proper one. . . .), can&#8217;t read music, don&#8217;t know the point of origin of anything, give up at once if something is difficult, don&#8217;t have anything whatsoever memorized (except the TV Guide listings), will tip the coat-check girl more than they&#8217;re willing to pay the babysitter, and think Jeopardy is boring.  The fate of the planet will soon be in the hands of people who will have to Google every simple thing because they don&#8217;t have the skills or schema to hold anything much in their heads.  They know what kind of bedroom furniture Brittney or Angelina or Lindsay have, but they couldn&#8217;t name a single living scientist.  Music consists of four chords and a lot of near-rhymes.   They know jokes about Helen Keller but they don&#8217;t know who she really was.  Or even THAT she really was.  They can&#8217;t write cursive, or read it.  And they&#8217;ve got thumbs like Popeye&#8217;s from texting 24/7 instead of paying attention to the world.  Many of them wouldn&#8217;t know who Popeye is.  Or that those big constantly tapping thumbs are &#8220;opposable.&#8221;  Or what that even means.  Of the world of inferentials, they know nothing.</p>
<p>This current trend of schools not requiring memorization, homework, or the actual earning of merits has got to end.  There are already far too many stupid people in the world; we don&#8217;t need any with a diploma in their hands.  A person who doesn&#8217;t earn it doesn&#8217;t deserve it.</p>
<p>A diploma is only for students who have proven knowledge.  A diploma is not for showing up, self-esteem, or keeping friends together.  An employer has the right to assume that a diploma represents actual earned merit, and that every holder of a diploma is literate enough to not only survive in this world but also to help others survive.  I have no problem whatsoever with holding students in a particular level until they themselves, with no outside help, prove &#8220;master enough&#8221; to earn the right to move up a notch.  Promotion is not a right; it&#8217;s the consequence for earned proof of literacy.</p>
<p>By not requiring that our students earn as much knowledge as possible, and by not requiring that students prove it, we are ensuring that our planet will be flushing itself down the toilet of repeated history, misunderstandings and lack of understanding, and the extolling of ignorance as the norm, instead of the shameful and easily remedied thing that it actually is.</p>
<p>Bring it on, youngsters.  If you have the schema to do it.</p>
<p>P.S.  I am not afraid of the word &#8220;stupid.&#8221;  It is NOT the same thing as &#8220;ignorant.&#8221;  We are all ignorant in many areas, but we are only stupid if we refuse to try when we have the chance.  And yes, there are an awful lot of stupid people out there.</p>
<p>P.P.S.  If you are not a careful reader and try to accuse me of being insensitive to special needs students, please see the above paragraph.</p>

When a child comes to school in rags, shoes held together with tape and rubber bands, it&#8217;s pretty much a done deal that there&#8217;s trouble at home. Usually, these children were ravenous because the only &#8216;decent&#8217; meal they ever got was at school so Monday mornings, so they RAN from the bus to the cafeteria for that free breakfast that was sometimes the first food they&#8217;d had since their free Friday lunch.</p>
<p>Most of the time, THOSE parents never darkened the door of the school for any reason. Occasionally, one of them would actually show up for a conference, and I would sit there on the other side of the table gritting my teeth and gripping a pencil so tight that sometimes it broke, because nine times out of ten, the parent of my raggedy little starveling was dressed pretty darn well, and it was rare that he/she didn&#8217;t reek of cigarette smoke. In other words, money WAS being spent, but not on the child.</p>
<p>Cigarettes in the purse, no socks on the child. Beer in the refrigerator, no decent shoes for the child. Nice clothes on the adult, rags on the child.  Warm winter coat on the adult, a t-shirt on the child.</p>
<p>I can feel my blood pressure rising as I remember it.</p>
<p>Why, why, WHY, when these poor kids are constantly removed from these &#8216;homes,&#8217; are they just as constantly put right back in to be mistreated just like before? Sometimes, in fact most times, &#8216;keeping the family together&#8217; is NOT important. Sometimes, splitting a family apart is the best thing that could ever happen to it. When parents do not behave like adults, they have no business inflicting it on innocent children. Get the kids out of that house, and put them where they&#8217;ll be fed and clothed and loved. Any adult who would buy cigarettes when his/her child has no socks, is a monster, not fit to raise a child. Addictions? Cry me a river. The needs of children always come before any needs of an adult. And especially before an adult&#8217;s hobby, toy, or habit.  In fact, the needs of children come before ANYTHING remotely to do with an adult.</p>
<p>&#8220;Wahwahwah, don&#8217;t I deserve to have a life?&#8221;  Actually, no, you don&#8217;t.  Not until you have made sure your children&#8217;s needs have been taken care of, and, sadly enough for you, sometimes the bars have closed by the time you can go.  Of course, there&#8217;s always the 24-hour WalMart &#8211; you can throw a t-shirt on over your thong and your spike heels and get your cigarettes there.  Hey, you might even show up later on People of Walmart!  8-year-old Susie can watch the younger kids till you get home.  Wake her up and put her to work; she&#8217;s used to it.</p>
<p>Look around. Every person has a story to tell. Sometimes you can tell by their outsides, and sometimes you can&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Most of the time, that story has something to do with their home, and who was there, and who WASN&#8217;T there.</p>
<p>Some people are parents via biology or adoption, and others are parents via fate. There is no guarantee which kind will be the best kind.</p>
<p>I would bet money, though, if I had any money, that an adult who would put his/her own selfish wants and addictions over and above the needs of a little child, is not even going to be in the running. Shame on them. Shame, and more shame.</p>
<p>I do not understand many things in this world, and one of them is this: when &#8220;everybody&#8221; knows a home is not a fit place for a child, why does &#8220;everybody&#8221; talk about that fact, yet allow the child to remain in the home?</p>
<p>&#8220;What a shame, those poor kids, alcohol, drugs, prostitution, gambling, live-in lovers, possible molestation. . . . .&#8221; and then we watch them get on the bus, knowing they&#8217;re going &#8220;home&#8221; to hell house.</p>
<p>I know that mistakes are made all the time, in removing children from so-called &#8216;homes,&#8217; but I think even more mistakes are made all the time in NOT removing children. Why should their worthless parents have all the rights, and the children have none?</p>
<p>I am so down tonight. I wish I could gather up all these kids and wash them, and feed them, and put clean socks on their feet, and intact shoes, and pretty clothes. I wish I could fill Christmas stockings and Easter baskets for them, and hug them, and give each one a doll or toy of some kind that would be their very own and nobody else&#8217;s. And if their worthless deadbeat parent tried to take it and sell it for drugs or booze, I hope a sensor in it would explode and wipe that bum off the face of the earth. Peace on earth, yes.</p>
<p>Read it right: &#8220;Peace on earth to men of good will.&#8221;</p>
<p>The other kind can bite me.</p>

<p>Remember that anecdote about the young bride whose husband asked her why she cut the beef roast in half before she put it in the pan?</p>
<p>She told him she did it that way because her mother always did it that way.</p>
<p>So the young husband asked his mother-in-law why she had always cut the beef roast in half before she put it in the pan. Her reply? She did it that way because HER mother had always done it that way.</p>
<p>At the next family dinner, the husband asked his wife&#8217;s grandmother why she had always cut the beef roast in half before putting it in the pan. Her reply? Because her mother had always done it that way.</p>
<p>His wife&#8217;s great-grandmother was still alive, so he went to the nursing home and asked her why she always cut the beef roast in half before putting it in the pan. Her reply?</p>
<p>&#8220;I only had the one small pan, and the only way a roast would fit in it was if it was first cut into two pieces.&#8221;</p>
<p>When my children visit, I often think of this story. I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s true or not, but it might as well be, because so many of the things we do make no sense except in the context of the past.</p>
<p>Both of my children love grilled cheese sandwiches. I mean, who doesn&#8217;t? Secondly, neither of my children will touch a grilled cheese sandwich unless it is made with Velveeta.</p>
<p>Thirdly, and most importantly, I can grant these wishes because A. I won&#8217;t eat a grilled cheese sandwich unless it was made with Velveeta, either, and B. Velveeta is a name brand food I can actually AFFORD!</p>
<p>When my son visits, he often requests grilled cheese sandwiches the minute he enters the house.  When he was a little boy, the only way he could eat a grilled cheese sandwich was if I mashed it down flat with the spatula after the Velveeta had melted. THEN his little mouth could close around it, and he could eat the sandwich &#8220;like a man.&#8221;</p>
<p>He&#8217;s an adult now, but he still wants his grilled cheese sandwiches flattened with the spatula. Why?  Because that&#8217;s how his mother always made them.</p>
<p>When he gets married, I can&#8217;t wait to hear his wife&#8217;s reaction when he asks her to mash a perfectly good sandwich flat. Will she question it, or just do it?</p>
<p>Sometimes, family traditions have serious beginnings and funny middles. As for the endings, there aren&#8217;t any, not really.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The morning began like any other; we stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, and sat back down to watch Channel One News, which had been taped at 3:00 that morning in the school library, thanks to the timer. But Channel One News didn&#8217;t come on.</p>
<p>Instead, the secretary&#8217;s voice, over the intercom, told the teachers to &#8220;please check your email immediately.&#8221; We did. And we found out what had happened.</p>
<p>I scrolled down the monitor and read the end of the message. The superintendent had ordered all teachers to be absolutely mum all day about the tragedy. We were not to answer any questions from students, and we were especially not to offer any information to them.</p>
<p>The day went by in a blur. Many parents drove to the school, took their kids out, and brought them home. Between classes, frightened groups of students gathered in front of their lockers and whispered, gossiped, and cried, and begged us for information. By that time, the superintendent&#8217;s order had been seconded by the principals, and we were unable to give these terrified kids any information. In the computer labs, the MSN screens told the 8th graders the truth, but they, too, were instructed NOT to talk about it to the other students. Right, like THAT happened. The story was being repeated by 8th graders, and it was being told bloody-killing-deathtrap-you&#8217;re next-video-game-style.</p>
<p>At noon, many of the students were picked up by parents and taken home or out for lunch. Those few who returned had a big tale to tell. The problem was, the tale was being told by children, and few if any of the facts were straight. The tale was being told scary-style, and the atmosphere in the building got more and more strained. We are only a few miles away from an immensely large Navy base, where ammunition and bombs are made, and we&#8217;ve always known it was a prime target, which means, of course, that we are, too. Many of my children&#8217;s parents worked there. The base was locked down and those parents did not come home that night.</p>
<p>Reasonable questions were answered with silence, or the statement: &#8220;You&#8217;ll find out when you get home.&#8221;</p>
<p>This, added to all the rumors and gossip spread by children, turned my little sixth graders into terrified toddlers.</p>
<p>As teachers, we were furious and disgusted with the superintendent&#8217;s edict. We wanted to call all the students into the gym and calmly tell them the truth in words and ways that would be age-appropriate. We wanted to hug them and assure them that it was far away and they were safe. We asked for permission to do this, and it was denied. Our orders were &#8216;silence.&#8217; We hadn&#8217;t been allowed to hug them for years, of course, but there are times and places when hugs ARE appropriate. No matter, the superintendent stood firm: no information whatsoever.</p>
<p>The day went by, more slowly than ever a day before. The students grew more and more pale and frightened. We asked again, and again he stood firm that no information whatsoever was to be given out.</p>
<p>By the end of the day, the children were as brittle as Jolly Rancher Watermelon Sticks.</p>
<p>A few minutes before the bell rang to send them home, a little girl raised her hand and in a trembling voice that I will never forget, asked me a question. &#8220;Please, is it true that our parents are dead and our houses are burned down?&#8221;</p>
<p>That was it. I gathered my students close and in a calm voice explained to them exactly what had happened. I told them their parents were alive and safe, and that they all still had homes to go to.</p>
<p>The relief was incredible. I could feel it cascading all through the room.</p>
<p>I was, of course, written up for insubordination the next day, but I didn&#8217;t care. My phone had rung off the hook that night with parents thanking me for being honest with their children. That was far more important than a piece of paper that said I&#8217;d defied a stupid inappropriate order meted out by a man who belonged in the office of a used car lot, not in a position of power over children&#8217;s lives.</p>
<p>The next day at school, in my room, we listened to some of the music that had been &#8216;specially made about the tragedy. I still have those cd&#8217;s and I&#8217;ve shared them with many people over the past few years.  It is true that kids cried again, but it was good to cry. It was an appropriate time to cry. We didn&#8217;t do spelling or grammar that day. There are times when the &#8220;business as usual&#8221; mindset simply is not appropriate.</p>
<p>I wish administrators would realize that kids are a lot tougher than we might think. Kids are also a lot more sensitive that we might realize. It&#8217;s an odd combination, and we as educators must try our best to bring the two ends of the emotional spectrum together and help these kids learn to deal with horrible happenings and still manage to get through the day as well as possible.</p>
<p>Ignoring an issue will not help. Morbidly focusing on an issue will not help. Our children are not stupid, and to treat them as such is not something that builds trust. Our children deserve answers to their questions.</p>
<p>How can we expect our children to learn to find a happy medium if we don&#8217;t show them ourselves, when opportunities arise?</p>

<p>Mamacita says:  This is a caffeine molecule.  We hang out far too much.  I had thought about writing a humorous essay about how I&#8217;ve been known to drive to WalMart at 3 a.m. for Diet Coke because we were out and I couldn&#8217;t wait for morning to go get some.</p>
<p>But that isn&#8217;t really funny &#8211; it&#8217;s just sad. Besides, ever since I discovered the &#8220;People of WalMart&#8221; website, I&#8217;ve been afraid I&#8217;d end up on there with keywords like &#8220;dowdy&#8221; and &#8220;hoarder&#8221; under my not-even-lucky-enough-to-be-blurry picture.</p>
<p>So I thought I&#8217;d talk about how even my students know I&#8217;m happier when there&#8217;s a Diet Coke on my desk, and when the professor is happy, everybody in the room is happy. And how sometimes, a student will even bring me a Diet Coke.</p>
<p>Diet Coke is the new apple for the teacher.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not really humorous, either.</p>
<p>Then I thought about mentioning how people who know me make a point of having Diet Coke in their refrigerators when they invite me over or know I&#8217;ll be there.  People who wouldn&#8217;t touch a Diet Coke with a ten foot pole will make sure they&#8217;re a few for me, even in, among, and around their own wholesome, nutritious spring waters and fruit juices.</p>
<p>Again, not funny.</p>
<p>Well, how about a piece about how flavored colas are Satan Juice, especially the lime ones?</p>
<p>Naw.  Silly isn&#8217;t humorous; it&#8217;s just silly.</p>
<p>Finally, I thought about turning my original idea from humor to a serious talk about health and well-being, figuring that it might help a few people battle their own obsessions.</p>
<p>&#8220;My poor personal example might inspire someone to take charge of his/her own nutritional requirements and make wiser choices, &#8221; thought I.</p>
<p>Like that&#8217;s going to happen.</p>
<p>So I&#8217;m showing you all what a caffeine molecule looks like because <span style="text-decoration: line-through;"> I think it&#8217;s all cute and stuff, and it makes me snicker to imagine an ice-cold bottle full of these little wiggly jobbers being sucked down someone&#8217;s throat on a hot day </span> science is important.</p>
<p>In fact, science is one of my favorite things.  That&#8217;s because science is ALL things, a wonder at a time.</p>
<p>Oh, and the melted Mentos and Diet Coke dregs left in the bottle after the Geyser goes off are delicious.</p>
<p>And, I&#8217;m sure, quite good for us.  No, I&#8217;m not sharing.  Back off.</p>

It often happens &#8211; I sincerely hope &#8211; that in the course of our education we are required to learn something we simply do not understand.</p>
<p>&#8220;Whyyyyyyyy do I have to learn this?  (Best said in a whiny, nasal tone.)</p>
<p>There are many answers to this question, all correct, although &#8220;Because it&#8217;s going to be on the test&#8221; is the poorest answer, even though it might be the only answer the student is capable of understanding AT THE MOMENT.  Education is so full of wonders that it&#8217;s difficult to highlight just one, but I&#8217;ll give it a shot.</p>
<p>One of my favorite educational wonders is the simple fact that there are many things we learn for which we know no immediate reason. This not &#8220;knowledge for knowledge&#8217;s sake,&#8221; although I love to know things just to know them.  This is &#8220;life prep.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hasn&#8217;t it ever happened to you, that five, ten, thirty, sixty years later, something pops in your brain and suddenly you make a connection to that little poem your mean third grade teacher made you memorize much against your will, and you are able to comprehend something?</p>
<p>I thought so.</p>
<p>THAT&#8217;S why you &#8220;have to learn this stuff&#8221; now.  Some of it is for today, and some of it is for tomorrow, and some of it is for when you&#8217;re seventy-two years old and struggling with questions far more difficult than school ever made you do. Each of your teachers is trying to prepare you not merely for the next grade up, but for all of the rest of your life. Everything you have ever learned is stored away in your head, somewhere, waiting to serve you &#8220;later.&#8221;  Good teachers know this, and do their level best to encourage students to find and understand the connections and relationships between and among &#8220;things.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve always tried to do, anyway.  I didn&#8217;t learn that in college.  I learned it from some of my own teachers.  Not all; just the good ones.  I learned plenty from the bad teachers, too, and not just because bad examples are as useful &#8211; and sometimes more so &#8211; than good examples.  The many good teachers in my life taught me much more than their job description required, and it was these &#8220;tangents&#8221; that taught me the most.  I do this with my students, too, and often those tangents end up being more important than the actual lesson.</p>
<p>If our children learn nothing else in school, I hope they learn about the connections, which are, of course, also relationships.  Connecting the dots between math and English and science and history, etc, will help us all want to learn more, and more, and more, and never stop learning more.  I consider that to be my primary goal.  Perhaps knowing these things about me  will soften what I am about to say next, which is simply this:</p>
<p>It’s no surprise to me that a student doesn’t much like to sit still  and pay attention when the instructor is boring, lackluster, monotonous, incompetent, and  uninformed.  (Or any one of those things.)  Excellent lessons require much more than books, paper, and  pencils; they require the skills of a savvy standup. You can&#8217;t teach Period 7 the same way you taught Period 2; it&#8217;s a different audience.</p>
<p>However, I still maintain that the majority of responsibility  for learning lies with the student, not the teacher.    A person who  desires to learn will learn in spite of all of the obstacles our modern  educational system puts in his/her path, and believe me, modern  educational systems put all the obstacles in the path of our students  that they possibly can.</p>
<p>It’s still – mostly – the student’s responsiblity.</p>
<p>Bring it on.</p>
<p>(Another re-run.  We&#8217;re moving this week.  I&#8217;m buried alive in stress, mess, &amp; junk.  This house is a hoarder&#8217;s dream.)</p>

<p>I have seen many teachers fail at the secondary level, because they just simply did not have &#8216;the knack.&#8217;.  I have seen a lot of excellent, successful elementary teachers fail at this level, because they did not have &#8216;the knack.&#8217;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easier to do at the upper high school level, because some of those students are more mature than some adults I&#8217;ve known.  But at the middle school level, and the lower high school levels, it&#8217;s harder to do, and even more important to do it.</p>
<p>Once in middle school, students are no longer &#8216;children.&#8217;  Oh, we know they still are, but don&#8217;t make the mistake of treating them as you would treat a fifth-grader.</p>
<p>Never talk to older students as you would talk to younger ones.</p>
<p>A teacher can lose an entire group of seventh-graders simply by referring to them as &#8216;boys and girls.&#8217;  I&#8217;ve seen entire classes turn against a teacher because he/she used a tone of voice that connoted &#8216;elementary.&#8217;  I&#8217;ve seen principals wonder all year why the students disliked him/her so much, and it was all because of a condescending remark made on the first day of school, that the adult doesn&#8217;t even remember but every student knows by heart.</p>
<p>Never talk down to older students.  Or younger ones either, for that matter.</p>
<p>Put simply, talk to older students as THEY THINK you talk to other adults.  And put simply, that&#8217;s not simple.</p>
<p>It is possible to talk to an older student about very serious matters, or matters that are actually frivolous but which are important to the student, in a tone of voice that tells the pre-teen or teen that you consider them capable of reasonable judgment, and that you respect what they have to say.  Two teachers can say the exact same thing and one of them will succeed while the other antagonizes and infuriates the student.</p>
<p>There is some kind of internal attitude inside each teacher, and the least astute kid in the entire school can pick up on it.</p>
<p>Being a good teacher is hard work, exhausting and nerve-wracking.  Loving kids isn&#8217;t enough to be a good teacher.  Being organized isn&#8217;t enough.  Being passionate about one&#8217;s subject isn&#8217;t enough.  Being a member of Mensa isn&#8217;t enough.  Having been an excellent student oneself, isn&#8217;t enough.  Ditto on having been a poor student.  Having kids of your own isn&#8217;t enough.  Wanting desperately to have kids of your own isn&#8217;t enough.  Having had an excellent teacher in one&#8217;s past isn&#8217;t enough.  Having had a terrible teacher in one&#8217;s past isn&#8217;t enough.  Being the favorite Aunt or Uncle to tons of nieces and nephews isn&#8217;t enough.  Combinations of these things aren&#8217;t enough.</p>
<p>Oh, those are excellent parts of a teacher&#8217;s background, yes.  Definitely.  But alone or in any combination, they are not enough.</p>
<p>To be able to deal with secondary students, to be able to communicate and earn their respect, a secondary teacher has to have the right kind of internal attitude.</p>
<p>Can&#8217;t some of you still instinctively know when someone is sincere?  Do you still have that radar detector in your brain that tells you when somebody can be trusted?   Pre-teens have this instinct, and it&#8217;s sharp and clear and laced with brand-new hormones, a big hunk of  &#8216;fear of the unknown,&#8217; and an intense desire to be accepted.</p>
<p>A good teacher must understand the pack instinct of teens, and be good at intervening, listening, and helping them to realize that it&#8217;s not the best way to live.  Some cliques at this level can be brutal; a good teacher watches for such things like a hawk and simply does not permit it<br />
in his/her classroom. A good teacher must have shock absorbers in his/her heart, because some of the things older kids will tell them are real zingers.  A good teacher knows how to speak the &#8220;language: of all the different social groups within the system.  (A REALLY dedicated teacher is bilingual.) A good teacher knows how to encourage individuality and creativity, and be able to stand firm when a student or his parents try to buck the system and gain privileges which that student did not personally earn.  Other students know when this happens.  Word gets out, and it gets out fast.</p>
<p>Good teachers are probably just a tad on the schizo side, because every time the bell rings, they have to shake off one personality and put on another.  No two classes are alike, and a good teacher will not try to teach them in the same way.  Secondary teachers are doing stand-up, and audiences differ with every gig.</p>
<p>It goes without saying that a good teacher will not compare a student with his/her older brother or sister, even favorably.  Each student stands, or falls, on his/her own merit and work habits.  Students respect that, even when they try to sway the teacher.  They know that some teachers are easily swayed, more&#8217;s the pity.  (The good teachers aren&#8217;t.)</p>
<p>Secondary teachers, the good ones, know how to talk to the students as the students <img src="http://classacts.diaryland.com/images/dragonatdesk.gif" border="0" alt="" />think one adult talks to another.  Read that sentence carefully, for it does not say that a good teacher talks to the students as one adult to another.</p>
<p>Some teachers will not agree with me.  That&#8217;s fine.  All I know is, those things worked for me, and for several other teachers that I know.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll add this, too:  A good secondary teachers keeps up.  He/she knows what the students are reading, and what they&#8217;re watching, and what they&#8217;re listening to, and who.  This is absolutely vital at this level.  If you are conversing with a secondary student and that student happens to drop the name of a band and tells you this band is his/her idol and he/she adores them, and you don&#8217;t know ahead of time that this band advocates drugs and violence and kinky sex, and that the lead singer has been arrested for DUI and CDM several times, something ignorant such as &#8220;Oh, me too, aren&#8217;t they awesome?&#8221; might be said.  And any teacher who doesn&#8217;t know ALL about Facebook and texting and pretty much all other aspects of social networking has no business at either the elementary OR secondary level.  Check that stuff OUT, because I&#8217;ll tell you what, your students sure are.  Get on there yourself so you can communicate.</p>
<p>These things have to be done carefully, remember.  Don&#8217;t make the mistake of trying to ingratiate yourself with students by using their generation&#8217;s groovy, out-of-sight, beat-me-daddy-eight-to-the-bar, gnarly vernacular with them.  Some words were never meant to come out of the mouths of actual adults.  Am I right, peeps?</p>
<p>All of these things, and more, can be done if a teacher has that internal attitude, the right attitude, the one that can&#8217;t be detected by anyone except a teenager.  Sometimes, other teachers sense something different about a really good teacher, and there are occasional clashes.  Age has nothing to do with it; some of the very best teachers are 110 years old if they&#8217;re a day, and some of the least savvy ones are 25.</p>
<p>Middle school kids are the greatest; I loved teaching that age level.  Teachers who tell you that those grades are a nightmare just didn&#8217;t do it right.  Such statements are unkind, and untrue.</p>
<p>I am not, of course, referring to NASTY SPOILED BRATS WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN REQUIRED TO BEHAVE PROPERLY IN PUBLIC, but that is their parents&#8217; responsibility and fault.  They should arrive at school already knowing how to behave.  But I&#8217;ve ranted about that too much already. . . . .</p>
<p>Good parents always go to parent-teacher conferences, of course.  While you are there, see if you can dredge up some of that adolescent attitude detection you used to have.  Check out your kids&#8217; teachers.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not saying to sniff them all over like a dog, but wouldn&#8217;t it be cool if we could?  Heh.</p>
<p>At any age, we could all use (to paraphrase Hemingway) a good, built-in shock-proof shit detector.  Our students need it for us, and we need it for them.</p>
