Of course cheap and free activities can be found anywhere. I guess it depends quite a bit on the type of activities one is looking for.

When my son was in the Grade 8 band, they played during the kindergarten/grade 1/grade 2 Christmas concert. All through the first 2 numbers they played, parents wandered around the gymnasium, called and yoo-hoo-ed to friends and neighbours on the other side of the room, played "chase me" with their smaller children, and otherwise made fools of themselves. Before the band played their last 2 selections, the music teacher and director approached the mike and asked the audience to take their seats and show respect to the performers. As I was applauding, those around me were grumbling about not being "interested" when their children were not on stage. I wonder how they would have reacted had I disrupted the performance of their little darlings?

Yeah. Bail out on watching the neighbors' kid perform so you can get home to watch a total stranger perform half a continent away.

I so agree. We have sat through numerous concerts, ballet recitals and awards ceremonies and it has been worth every moment of our time. It is such a wonderful, positive experience to be part of--what is happening(has happened?) to our culture. Or our etiquette?

You have no idea the burning hatred I hold for parents who either don't show up for their kids or show up just for their kids and make a spectacle out of themselves and embarrass their kids in the process.

I'm not a violent person, but I'm getting pissed off thinking about this even now, and I won't be asked to go to such a function anymore until if/when I get grandkids.
